Question

Is it true that PCOS patients just need to watch their cholesterol when pregnant? Also your weight? Is all of that true?

Answer

PCOS patients have a higher incidence of obesity . So, when pregnant one would have to keep a check on weight. Also, since they have insulin resistance, there is a higher incidence of diabetes . There is also a higher incidence of first trimester abortions. All these factors can be controlled , so you don't need to worry!

Question

Can high amounts of insulin in your body cause you to not have menstraul cycles. I will be 14 in August and I haven't had one yet. Plus my Thyroid Doctor said I have to go on The Insulin Resistant Diet to prevent me from getting Diabetes and to maybe help me with my cycles. He says if I don't improve in 6 months then he is going to give me a pill to reduce the insulin and help me have cycles, but he says I might not be fertile. What's the point? I need help to understand this better and to get another opinion?

Answer

Do you have PCO (polycystic ovaries)? This is associated with irregular periods, anovulation and insulin resistance. If you are overweight, losing weight and taking metformin will help your cycles to be regular and help you conceive. 10 - 20 % of women have PCO, so it is a common condition and you require this medication only when you wish to conceive.

Question

I got my periods only in 60 days i also noticed hear growth under my chin .Also i have put on 6 kgs in last one month.I did not have any diet change .Please advise if i should be seeing a gync, also what the illness could be ?

Answer

Have an ultrasound done to check whether you have PCO ( polycystic ovaries) . This is associated with irregular periods , obesity and a high testosterone level. This can give rise to excessive hair growth . losing weight may help to regularise your cycles .

Question

I have a yelowish discharge and a couple of years ago like 3 yrs i remember having a brownish puss but it went away i went to a local doctor and he said i have a baterial infection he gave me three sets of medication so far but none seems to work what do u suggest?

Answer

Have a vaginal swab done for culture and sensitivity. This will help determine what infection you have and what is the best antibiotic for you. You can send me the report for further advice or your gynec. should be able to tell you which medication you would require.

Question

I have been having irregular periods for about a year now. About the same time I started getting excess body hair and my hair is falling(im afraid to go bald). I went to the GYN about 2 weeks ago and she did testing for Thyroid, pregnancy and other stuff. She found everything normal except that it seems like I have Polycycstic Ovaries because of the hormone level in my blood( dont really remember which hormone it is. She is having me do a Fasting insulin test to determine exactly whats going on. My question is if my problem is Polycystic ovaries, how would I be able to loose weight? I am atleast 100lbs over weight and i don't feel healthy because of my weight.I've tried everything and nothing helps. Can you please HELP ME?

Answer

It is indeed difficult ! However, all your symptoms are related to PCO , so you should see a dietician who can help you lose weight. Unfortunately, you will have to diet and exercise always to lose and then maintain your weight. The excessive hair growth and thinning of scalp hair is due to a high testosterone level .This is known as androgenic alopecia. You can use cysti- z locally or see a dermatologist who can advice you further. Unfortunately, all these problems will keep recurring and you have to accept this as normal !! You are not alone in this - 10- 20 % of women have PCO.

Question

I have not had my period yet. It will be one week late in two days. However, I have been taking the pill for 3 years and stopped it last month. On top of this, I had acid reflux and the flu. Could any of these be of cause of delaying my period or is there a possibility i can be pregnant? Waiting for your response?

Answer

Since you have stopped the pill, you may not have ovulated or had a delayed ovulation. This can cause the delay. Also, flu may cause a delay at times. If you have not got a period by now, do a urine test for pregnancy.

Question

Does spotting with a discharge that is snotty mean that you are still pregnant?

Answer

What do you mean " you are still pregnant" ?
Were you pregnant and had a miscarriage? Let me know , so I can advice you further.

Question

I had my first child at age 28. I went into labor 4 weeks early when my water broke. I didn't have any contractions or labor pains of any kind. I was given potasin and finally gave birth 24 hours later. Should I be concerned that this could happen again at an earlier point in the pregnancy when I get pregnant with another child? Will I be considered high risk?

Answer

Yes, you would have a risk of a premature delivery again. Your next pregnancy should be monitored carefully. The length of your cervix should be assessed on ultrasound and if it is showing signs of shortening , you may need a cerclage. This is to prevent the cervix opening prematurely. Also, you might need a vaginal swab to determine that there is no bacterial infection which can also cause premature rupture of membranes.

Question

Hi Doctor,
I am trying to conceive since 4 months. I am 29 years old and I maintain good health . I have regular periods. My gyno had a untrasound taken for my Pelvic region and I am diagonised with PCOS. The report says multiple Follicles in both the ovaries. This scan was taken 3 days after I completed my Periods. I am wondering if everything is okay?

Answer

Are you ovulating without medication. PCO is common in 10-20 % of women , but maybe associated with irregular periods or anovulation. Repeat the scan on day 13 of the cycle to measure the size of the follicle. If it reaches 20 mm , it is fine. You might then need an injection (pregnyl ) to rupture the follicle. Let me know , so I can advice you further. All the best !

Question

I badly need to have a baby but i misscarraged twice. I checked the reason and the doctor said this is because of your cervics opened one fingure so how can i solve the problem and have a baby?

Answer

Let me know at what stage of pregnancy you miscarried. Also, have you checked for toxoplasmosis ? Was the baby alive when you miscarried? Relax ! I am sure with proper treatment you can reduce the chances of another miscarriage.

Answer
You should do a vaginal smear for culture and sensitivity. This will let you know the type of infection you have and the best drug for that infection.

Question

I am four and a half weeks pregnant. I had brownish pinkish vaginal discharge this morning. It only happened the one time and I am not bleeding. Is this anything to be worried about?

Answer

Have an ultrasound done when you are 6 weeks to determine that the pregnancy is fine. By that time one should get the heart beat of the baby. The scan will also reveal whether the pregmancy is in the uterus or in the tube.

Question

I have been experiencing a brown viginal discharge which does not cause me any discomfortnor does it smell. Please can you advise on what it is and should I contact my GP?

Question

I have lower right side pelvic pain and a little back pain. I did pelvic ultra sound & transvaginal ultrasound. They found I had endometritis. Got antibiotics treatment. The back pain went but I still have right side pain. I did pap smear, it was normal. I did vaginal culture, it was normal. I did blood & urine test, they found I had urineary infection. I got antibiotic treatment. I still see a discharge that is cream/ like yellow and wet. Right side pain remains. Please advise me.

Answer

Have you checked for chlamydial infection? Also has chronic appendicitis been ruled out? If the pain does not subside, you may require a laparoscopy to determine the cause of the pain. You may have endometriosis or adhesions in the pelvis which may cause the pain.

Question

I have recently discovered a fishy vaginal odor. I have never had that problem before. I'm a very clean person. How do I get rid of the ordor?

Do you have any vaginal discharge also? Drink plenty of fluids, use only cotton panties. Use a feminine wash (like seba-med or sofarelle). If the problem persists, have a vaginal swab done to rule out any vaginal infection and take the appropriate treatment.

Question

Dear doctor,
Was diagnosted in april of this year 2005 having a cyst on my left ovary about 3.5 cm. this week went for another ultrasound as a follow-up, tecknicien said she couldn't find my ovaries!!!!
what could be the problem? my periods have become irregular sometimes going 3 months without, but I have severe cramping and have frequent urination at night, lower back pain and problem with bowel movements! I am 47 years old and not menoposal yet according to blood testing ! What could be the problem! thanking you in advance for your help.

Answer

There are certain " functional cysts ." These disappear without any treatment. Have your urine tested for infection. The irregular periods may have been because of the cyst. It could also be because you are in the peri- menopausal period. Does the scan reveal a fibroid? If you are constipated, take care of your diet. Avoid apples. Eat a lot of bran, spinach, prunes, salads etc. You can take duphalac syrup for the same. Urinary infection and constipation can cause abdominal cramping. You can take calcium tablets for your back pain.

Question

I am six months pregnant and i have high blood pressure. my doctor have precribed me ecosprin. is there any side effect of this medicine on my baby.and is ther any other way to reduce BP without medicine?

Answer

There is no way to reduce the blood pressure without medication. How high is the blood pressure? Is it normal after the ecosprin? You may require aldomet(methyl dopa) to reduce the blood pressure. A high pressure is dangerous for both you and your baby. It is essential to monitor it every 4-5 days.
